CentOS6 to be released in the next few weeks

According to an interview with Karanbir Singh – a major contributor to the project – it is just a question of a few weeks until we can expect CentOS6 to be released.

CentOS is extremely important for the RHEL community, it is a playground for trying out new stuff before getting into an engineering phase with the Red Hat supported RHEL.

Lets have fun with it…

I would also like to point out that Scientific Linux will be out in a few weeks with their version of RHEL 6. They had released beta 3 just last Friday, with a release candidate likely this Friday. They have even created a regular install DVD that mirrors the RHEL 6 install DVD.

I don’t understand what this means
“it is a playground for trying out new stuff before getting into an engineering phase with the Red Hat supported RHEL.”

that sounds more like Fedora, CentOS doesn’t lead RHEL it follows it.

      Hi Andy,

I was a bit unclear on this. It is more a playground and sandbox to i.e. try out if product X will work nicely with RHEL. It is also a playground to quickly try if something is working like expected.

From my point of view a RHEL subscription for sandboxes and playgrounds is waste of money, even in the enterprise world. On the other hand, RHEL is the way to go if you put a product or project into production.
